Ankeny Centennial wrestling coach Jay Groth isn’t sure what the Jaguars’ best lineup will be just yet.
But the one that he put on the mat Tuesday night looked pretty good.
Centennial opened the season with a pair of lopsided victories in a double dual meet. The host Jaguars posted a 58-16 win over Albia, then rolled to a 72-6 triumph over West Marshall.
“We’re still working on getting in shape, but that’s to be expected this early in the season,” said Groth, whose team is seventh in the Class 3A dual rankings. “It’s a long season, so we don’t have to be in peak physical condition for our first meet. We just have to be working toward it.”
Centennial had eight falls against Albia and 10 more against West Marshall. Cody Vandermark at 120 pounds, Andrew Roland at 132, Maximus Dhabolt at 138, Tyler Brennan at 144, Lucas Bruhl at 150, Ari Ehlts at 165, Jack Cahill at 190 and Brandon Bogseth at 215 each had two pins for the Jaguars.
Ethan Sodergren at 126 and Brook Keller at 285 had the other falls against West Marshall.
“I thought the guys wrestled pretty well,” Groth said. “We did some really good things and fought real hard. We just have to fine-tune some techniques and keep getting better.”
Centennial will host Waukee in its CIML Conference opener on Thursday. The Jaguars’ lineup could look different than it did on Tuesday.
“We aren’t there yet,” Groth said. “I don’t think we have our best lineup out there yet, but I’m also not sure what our best lineup is going to be quite yet. We have some battles for some positions at 144, 165, 175 and 190.”
