The Ankeny boys’ soccer team split a pair of games on Saturday in eastern Iowa.
The Hawks opened the day with a 3-0 victory over Cedar Rapids Kennedy at Coe College. They scored all three of their goals in the second half.
“It took us a little while to get going, but we grew into the game and gained control,” said Ankeny coach Trevor Fuccio. “(Goalkeeper) Jackson (Dockendorff) only had two shots on frame to face, so the backline is continuing to get stronger.”
Austin Lundberg scored his first goal in an Ankeny uniform. He was assisted by Tyler Woods.
Landon Benge scored off an assist by Cal Wahlberg, who added another goal off an assist by Benge.
The Hawks then traveled to Linn-Mar (Marion) and dropped a 3-2 decision in overtime, suffering their first loss. The Lions, meanwhile, evened their record at 1-1.
“The boys battled,” Fuccio said. “Linn-Mar is a quality team, and we battled and fought. We just came up short.”
The game was tied at 1-1 at halftime and 2-2 at the end of regulation. Benge scored both of Ankeny’s goals off assists by Keaton Kobow and Brian Jimenez.
The Hawks (2-1) will host Waukee on Tuesday.
