Averi Porter didn’t have to look very far to find a new home.
The former Ankeny Centennial basketball standout has committed to play for Rockhurst University after playing her freshman season at nearby William Jewell College in the Kansas City area.
“I had several offers from schools in the Midwest, but I based my final decision on not just the basketball opportunity but my post-graduate life goals,” said Porter. “I could see myself at Rockhurst, even if I wasn’t playing basketball. Rockhurst has great connections to the business community in Kansas City, and I have an interest in majoring in Business/Communication and working toward a law degree with a sports emphasis.”
Porter, a guard, entered the transfer portal after playing in 16 games with 11 starts this season for the Cardinals, who finished with a 6-22 record. She averaged 2.6 points and 1.9 assists in 17.6 minutes a game while going 6-of-11 from 3-point range.
Porter will be transferring from one Great Lakes Valley Conference school to another.
“Over the past year, Kansas City has become my home and I could see myself there long-term,” Porter said. “Rockhurst allows me to be in the city I love and near friends I’ve built close relationships with at William Jewell. I will also remain in the GLVC, where I felt I competed very well this season.”
