Monday was a good day for both the Ankeny and Ankeny Centennial boys’ soccer teams.
The Hawks moved into the No. 7 spot in the latest Class 4A rankings from the Iowa High School Athletic Association. That allowed coach Trevor Fuccio’s squad to earn a No. 1 seed in Substate 6 for postseason play.
Ankeny (9-6) will host either Cedar Rapids Jefferson (5-9) or Cedar Rapids Kennedy (2-9) in a substate semifinal on May 20. With a win, the Hawks would meet either Linn-Mar (Marion) (7-5) or Cedar Rapids Prairie (6-7) in the substate final on May 22.
Ankeny has already played two of those teams. The Hawks posted a 3-0 win over Cedar Rapids Kennedy on March 30 before dropping a 3-2 decision at Linn-Mar in overtime.
Centennial, meanwhile, has been placed in Substate 7. The Jaguars (5-10) will likely have to beat two ranked opponents in order to qualify for state, but they avoided a matchup against any of the CIML’s top teams.
Centennial will play at No. 10 Iowa City High (9-1) in a substate semifinal on May 20. The winner would play No. 8 Des Moines Roosevelt (9-3) or Ottumwa (7-3) in the substate final on May 22.
