The Ankeny Centennial girls’ golf team posted its best score of the season on Monday while placing fourth in the Waukee Invitational at Beaver Creek.
Ankeny, meanwhile, took 11th in the 13-team field. The event also served as the opening round of the CIML Conference meet, which will conclude on Wednesday at Otter Creek.
Centennial’s Payton Drefke carded a 5-over-par 77 to earn medalist honors. She finished one stroke ahead of runner-up Natalie Henson of Marshalltown.
Drefke had a 37 on the front nine, including a birdie on the par-4, No. 1 hole. She owns a three-stroke lead over Waukee Northwest’s Amelia Habgood heading into the final round of the conference meet.
“It was a great feeling coming out on top, especially without having to go to a handicap hole!” said Drefke. “There were a lot of good golfers at the invite, and I was even more happy to see our team shoot a season-best (score). We’re playing well at the right time. We just need to keep it going as we approach regionals.”
