Northern Iowa’s Trever Anderson has been named the Big 12 Conference’s Wrestler of the Week, as announced by the league office on Wednesday. The selection is the first weekly conference honor of his career.
Anderson’s selection comes after the Panther redshirt sophomore helped set the tone for UNI with a key upset victory in its 24-9 dual win over previously fourth-ranked Nebraska at home on Sunday, the program’s first against the Cornhuskers since 1991.
Facing off with No. 5 Caleb Smith at 125 pounds over the weekend, Anderson, who previously was unranked, scored an impressive 5-2 decision win over Smith, his second career victory over a top-five ranked challenger after beating No. 1 Jakob Camacho (North Carolina State) last season, as well as his first dual victory of the year.
An Ankeny native, Anderson has notched a 10-3 record this season with three pins, one major decision and one technical fall. During the 2023-24 season, he earned National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American honors, as well as Academic All-Big 12 First Team recognition and College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honors.
Anderson is the son of Robert and Sundae Anderson, and brother of Spencer and Jace. He is currently majoring in management information systems.
Anderson and the seventh-ranked Panthers return to action this weekend at the NWCA Multi-Division National Dual Meet Championships, held inside the UNI-Dome on Friday and Saturday. Live coverage of the two-day event can be found on FloWrestling.
