The Ankeny Centennial duo of Cale Vandermark and Max Dhabolt advanced to Saturday’s finals in the Class 3A state wrestling tournament at Wells Fargo Arena with technical falls on Friday.
“It’s good to be back in the finals again. It’s been a little while since we’ve been there,” said Centennial coach Jay Groth, whose last finalist came in 2019. “Those two guys have definitely earned it. They’ve worked their tails off to get there.”
The Jaguars moved into eighth place in the team standings with 88.5 points. Ankeny, meanwhile, is in 12th with 69.5 points.
Southeast Polk has already wrapped up its second consecutive crown. The Rams have scored a record 221.5 points heading into Saturday’s consolation finals, putting them more than 100 points ahead of Bettendorf.
Both Ankeny and Centennial are assured of having four placewinners. We will have much more on Day 3 of the state tournament coming later tonight or in the morning.
