Girls’ basketball coaching legend Scott DeJong of Ankeny Centennial has retired after 37 seasons, including the last 12 with the Jaguars.
DeJong turned in his resignation letter to Activities Director Nate Lingren on Tuesday afternoon.
“I had thought I would be doing this, but when it came down to it, I had a hard time writing the letter,” DeJong said. “I finally did today–officially. I don’t know if it’s sad or happy. Probably a little more sad about it than I am happy. I don’t know if that’s good or bad, but when you’ve done something for that long and enjoyed it and it’s been a great ride, it’s tough to stop. But at some point, you need to.
“And I thought this was the right time,” he added.
We’ll have much more on DeJong’s decision coming later.
