Thursday was the last day for high school athletes to qualify for this year’s Drake Relays, and the final opportunity for both the Ankeny and Ankeny Centennial boys’ track teams came in the Waukee Invitational held at Waukee Northwest.

The Hawks got a victory in the 1,600 from Isaiah Smith, who posted a time of 4:22.65 to win the race by more than 8 seconds. His win came on the heels of another impressive triumph in the 400 at the Fred Smith Hawk Relays on Tuesday, showing his ability to excel at a variety of distances.

The Jaguars got a win in the 3,200 from Jaxton Alvarez, who was clocked in 9:36.90. Teammate Davis Johnson was the runner-up in that event in 9:42.66.

Ankeny’s Sam Madsen placed second in the 110 hurdles. He set a personal best for the second time in three days, posting a time of 15.11 seconds.

Centennial’s Cohen Moll took third in the 800 with a time of 1:56.04. Johnathan Gilbert finished third in the shot put with a throw of 52 feet 2 inches.

Heisman Dickinson placed fourth for the Jaguars in the 200 in 22.88. He finished just ahead of teammate Noah Ross, who placed fifth in 22.97.

The Hawks will compete in the Hampton-Dumont Invitational on Monday. Centennial will host the Jaguar Invitational on Tuesday at Northview Stadium.
