The Ankeny boys’ tennis team struggled on Friday at the Johnston Invitational.
The Hawks won only two of their 15 matches on the day while competing against the host Dragons, Norwalk and Waukee. Each squad entered two singles players and three doubles teams in the tournament.
“We played 11 games in each of the three rounds,” said Ankeny coach Ron Miller. “We won one match at No. 1 doubles and one at No. 3, both by scores of 6-5. There’s not a lot to say.”
Miller was proud of the effort of Lincoln Geest and Holden Sungren, who played singles on Friday after teaming up at No. 4 doubles during Thursday’s loss to Waukee.
“Those two were the highlight of the day,” Miller said. “They did great against varsity singles players–not winning games but putting a lot of pressure on them with very little experience.”
The Hawks will head back to Johnston on Tuesday for a CIML Conference meet against the Dragons.
