After a dominant first half, the Ankeny Centennial boys’ soccer team cruised to a 2-0 victory over visiting Iowa City West in a non-conference game on Friday.
The second-ranked Jaguars got a pair of goals from Tate Duax in the opening half, and that proved to be enough against the No. 8 team in Class 4A. Lucas De la Cuba and Brock Brazeau each had an assist in the win.
“It was a great first half,” said Centennial coach Brian Duax. “We completely controlled the game and created tons of chances, but we didn’t finish enough of them. We have to gain more composure in the box.”
Centennial was unable to add to its lead in the second half, but the Jaguars’ defense thwarted any chance for a West comeback.
Goalkeeper Will Krueger was rarely tested during the game, finishing with just one save.
“The second half we became complacent again,” Duax said. “We had plenty of chances to put the game away, but we didn’t do it. Hats off to our keeper and the backline for keeping a clean sheet. We really only gave up one to three chances the entire game.
“We were closer to a complete game, but I’m still not satisfied with the second half,” he added.
Centennial remained unbeaten on the season, improving to 8-0-2. The Trojans’ record dropped to 5-4-1.
The Jaguars will host a non-conference game against Ames (4-4-3) on Monday. The Little Cyclones snapped a five-game winless streak with a 2-1 triumph over visiting Des Moines Hoover on Friday.
