The Ankeny Centennial girls’ golf team will become very familiar with Southeast Polk’s home course over the next nine days.
The Jaguars shot a 199 and placed third in their final CIML Conference triangular meet on Tuesday at Copper Creek. They will return to Pleasant Hill on Thursday for the Southeast Polk Invitational, then will play Copper Creek for a third time on May 13 when the course hosts the second round of the two-day conference tournament.
“This was the first time a lot of the girls have seen Copper Creek so it was difficult for a few of them to adjust to the slope and speed of the greens,” said Centennial coach Marty Kiepe, whose team finished 2-6 in the league. “I think this was a blessing in disguise for us to be able to get out here to play since we’ll be coming here two more times.”
Southeast Polk posted a 172 total to edge Waukee Northwest by four strokes. The Rams (8-0) wrapped up the conference dual-meet crown by defeating the previously unbeaten Wolves (7-1).
Southeast Polk’s Anna Wahman carded a 3-over-par 39 to earn medalist honors. Her sister, Kate, was the runner-up with a 40.
Centennial’s Cate Trewet placed third overall with a 41. She was coming off a personal-best round of 80 on Monday in the Dragon Invitational at Jester Park.
“I’ve just found my confidence again,” said Trewet, who has posted the Jaguars’ lowest score at every meet this season. “I had a hard week last week around the greens, and I worked hard over the weekend to get my confidence up. I’m the kind of player that once I get in a groove I can usually stick around and put a good number up! I still have quite a few shots that I wish I could take back, but that’s one thing about the game that keeps you coming back for more!”
Trewet played in the same group with Anna Wahman and Adalyn Wiig of Waukee Northwest, who took fourth overall with a 42.
“Cate a great day out there with only one double (bogey) on the card,” Kiepe said. “It can be tough playing with two great players like Anna and Adalyn, but she competed well and stuck with them all day.”
Maddy Gochoel fired a 50 for the Jaguars.
“Maddy had a rollercoaster round, but she continues to improve each day,” Kiepe said.
Centennial’s Kyler Jones carded a 52. Teagan Skinner shot a 56, Madi Trosper had a 58, and Gretta Borich added a 59.
