A fundraiser is being held for Ankeny wrestler Layne Hearne, who was severely injured during his match at the Greco-Roman state tournament last weekend.
As of Thursday, more than $25,000 had been raised in support of Layne. The goal is to raise $100,000.
Here is some more information from the gofundme site:
“Dear Family and Friends of Layne Hearne,
“We want to take a moment to update everyone on Layne’s condition following his injury. On Monday a group of parents and several students made the trip to Iowa City to spend time with Layne and his moms, and we’re pleased to share that he is maintaining a positive attitude and his trademark sense of humor. During the visit, Layne was sitting up and engaging in conversation, which is a testament to his resilient spirit.
“Physically, Layne has control over his arms, although he is currently facing challenges with fine motor skills and dexterity in his hands. The journey to recovery will be a long one, and while walking is a distant goal at this time, Layne remains hopeful. He is expected to stay at University Hospitals for at least another month.
“Layne truly appreciated the visit and is eager for more company. He would love to receive visitors, along with notes and posters to help brighten his hospital room.
“The wrestling community and the Ankeny school district have already shown tremendous support, and we are grateful for the outpouring of love, care, and concern. Please continue to keep Layne and his family in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this difficult path ahead.”
