Ankeny Centennial football standout Cade Newman is headed to Champaign.
The junior tight end announced his verbal commitment to Illinois on Saturday. Iowa State, Wake Forest, Air Force and Army were among his 19 Division I offers.
“I took two official visits–one to Iowa State and the other to Illinois,” said Newman. “I just really liked the coaching staff.”
Newman helped the Jaguars to a 5-5 record last season. He caught 10 passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns.
Newman was named to the District 4 first team. He is rated a three-star prospect.
Newman becomes the fifth verbal pledge in Illinois’ 2027 recruiting class. He is currently the only out-of-state commit.
“I liked how the tight ends coach (Jared Elliott) really believed in me and has a great vision for me,” Newman said. “Then coach (Bret) Bielema was super nice to talk to, and it was nice to further my relationship with him during the visit.
“I trust their plan for me, and I’m excited I get to be a part of a great program and develop into a great tight end,” he added.
