The Ankeny girls’ swimming team dominated the Grinnell Quadrangular on Thursday for the second year in a row.

Ankeny won six events and racked up 405 points, 172 more than runner-up Newton. Grinnell was third with 214 points, followed by Indianola with 118.

“We had a good meet!” said Ankeny coach Dustin Rhoads, whose team is now 3-1 on the season. “It is always fun to go there as it is an awesome pool, and we were able to swim some different things. I love the CIML, but it is nice to swim against some different competition and mix up the lineup.”

Sophomore Abigail Brugman had four victories on the night. She won the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:06.25 and later took the 100 backstroke in 1:04.00.

Ankeny opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Brugman, Allie Kearney, Holland Villhauer and Maggie Blackmore was clocked in 1:58.35.

Brugman later anchored her team to another victory in the 400 freestyle relay. She teamed up with Blackmore, Rowen Hutzell and Piper Hedrick to post a time of 3:55.73.

Ankeny swept the top three places in three different events. Avery Anderson won the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:26.60 and was followed by teammates Addy Mason (2:27.20) and Stella Seifert (2:32.65).

Brugman led a 1-2-3 sweep in both of her individual events. Hayden Ocheltree took second in the butterfly in 1:06.92, while Kylee Stone was third in 1:08.26.

Stone also placed third in the backstroke in 1:08.43. Hedrick was second in that event in 1:06.68.

“I think our depth really showed up tonight,” Rhoads said. “I am excited about this team because we have so many different options. The competition on our team to make the top three in an event is very strong and will only help push everyone to keep getting better.”

Ankeny’s other win came in the 200 freestyle relay. The quartet of Blackmore, Allie Breuner, Hedrick and Hutzell posted a time of 1:46.56.

Anderson was the runner-up in the 500 freestyle in 5:39.03. Hutzell finished third in that event in 5:40.26.

Kambelle Subbert added a second-place finish in the diving event. She posted a score of 212.60 points.

Kearney placed third in both the 100 freestyle (59.62) and 100 breaststroke (1:15.47). Also placing third were Hedrick in the 200 freestyle (2:06.87) and Blackmore in the 50 freestyle (26.23).

“We have a long way to go and many things to figure out, but I am pleased with where we are currently at,” Rhoads said. “We can never be upset about picking up three wins no matter what the individual times looked like.”

Ankeny will host a CIML Conference meet against Valley on Tuesday at Trail Point Aquatics Center. The meet will get under way at 5 p.m. with the diving.

Rhoads’ team will be looking to avenge last year’s 95-90 loss to the Tigers.

“It is exciting to have our home opener on Tuesday with a big meet vs. Valley!” Rhoads said. “We will recover over the weekend and be ready to go! We did not forget about last year’s dual.”
