Thursday was a rough day on the tennis courts for both the Ankeny and Ankeny Centennial girls’ teams.
The Jaguars dropped an 11-0 decision to visiting Valley at the Prairie Ridge courts. In another CIML Conference matchup, the Hawkettes traveled to Johnston and suffered an 11-0 loss.
“It was a hot night on the tennis courts, but the girls competed hard and continued to show their growth,” said Centennial coach Alli Gustafson. “Week after week, we are seeing improvement and are encouraged by the progress they bring to the court at each meet. Our groundstrokes are continuing to come together, especially as we focus on consistency and keeping the ball cross-court.”
Johnston kept pace with defending state champion Waukee Northwest at the top of the conference standings. The Dragons improved to 3-0 in the league and 11-0 overall.
Valley raised its records to 5-2 and 9-3. Centennial is now 2-3 and 3-6, while Ankeny’s marks fell to 1-6 and 3-7.

Both teams will face another big challenge on Tuesday. The Hawkettes will play a conference meet at Dowling Catholic (4-1, 7-2), while the Jaguars will travel to Waukee Northwest (6-0, 8-0).
“We are excited to keep building day after day,” Gustafson said.
