The showdown between the Ankeny and Ankeny Centennial girls’ soccer teams will be decided by a shootout on Wednesday at Ankeny High School, beginning at 4:45 p.m. The Jag-Hawk boys’ game will then follow at 5 p.m.
The girls’ contest was tied at 2-2 on Tuesday when play was suspended due to lightning. There was also a 30-minute lightning delay earlier in the game.
Ankeny took a 1-0 lead late in the first half on a penalty kick by Alexis Legg. Centennial scored twice in the second half on a pair of corner kicks before play was halted due to lightning.
Shortly after play resumed, the Hawkettes tied the score on a goal by Riley Whitaker in the 63rd minute. She found the net from about 30 yards out.
The game eventually went to overtime, and the two teams then battled through two scoreless extra periods before Mother Nature once again intervened.
