Sam Klug tossed a three-hitter and had nine strikeouts to lead the 10th-ranked Ankeny Centennial softball team to a 2-0 victory over No. 6 Iowa City High in the quarterfinals of the Class 5A state tournament on Tuesday at Harlan Rogers Park in Fort Dodge.
Klug (11-5) retired the last 11 batters that she faced as Centennial (32-9) advanced to the semifinals for the second straight year. The Jaguars will play No. 5 Pleasant Valley (34-7) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Centennial had just two hits off Iowa City High pitchers Ella Cook and Ayana Lindsey, but it turned out to be enough. Cook walked six batters in three-plus innings, and two of them–Addi Starr and Lauren Solis–eventually scored the Jaguars’ only runs.
The Little Hawks (33-8) will play No. 12 Southeast Polk (21-19) in a consolation game on Wednesday.
