The Ankeny Centennial girls’ soccer team didn’t have much time to regroup from a loss on Friday night.
After dropping a 2-1 overtime decision to fifth-ranked Council Bluffs Lincoln, the No. 4 Jaguars returned to the pitch on Saturday morning and posted a 4-0 victory over Waukee in their final game of the Crosstown Invitational.
“We talked about our identity as a team before the Waukee game,” said Centennial coach Chris Allen, whose team is now 2-1 on the season. “We’re still a fairly young team. It was just a matter of defining who we are and how we want to play.”
Averi Porter opened the scoring against Waukee (1-2) with a goal from about 30 yards out just 6 minutes into the game. Freshman Ava Martin later scored her first varsity goal in the 31st minute to give the Jaguars a 2-0 halftime lead.
Izzy Sash and Cady Compton each added a goal midway through the second half to complete the scoring. Olivia Kroska had an assist.
On Friday, Lincoln took an early 1-0 lead when Hanna Schimmer scored off an assist by Liberty Bates about 5 minutes into the first half.
“Lincoln came out super aggressive,” Allen said. “You could tell that they wanted to try to send a message, and we were going to be the package that they sent that message on. And yet, we had a little bit more of possession and we had more shots, but initially we couldn’t match the intensity and the energy they came out with.”
Centennial tied the game in the 59th minute on a goal by Avery Lewis. Her corner kick was caught by Lincoln’s Savanna Vanderwerf, but the sophomore goalkeeper then crossed the goal line with the ball.
“We regrouped over halftime and played a lot better the second half,” Allen said.
However, Lincoln (2-0) eventually scored the winning goal 2 minutes into overtime. Piper McGuire scored off an assist by Schimmer to end the game.
“We came out pressing for a goal in extra time, but unfortunately they were able to come back down the field and we made a mistake in the middle third and we weren’t able to cover the ball in the box very well, and they were able to put it away,” Allen said.
The Jaguars will play non-conference games at Urbandale (1-1) on Tuesday and at No. 13 Johnston (0-1) on Friday.
