The Ankeny girls’ soccer team played without several varsity regulars on Tuesday night.
It turns out that the second-ranked Hawkettes didn’t need them.
Ankeny got a hat trick from sophomore midfielder Emma Gott and rolled to a 10-0 victory at Ottumwa in a non-conference game.
“We had 11 full-time varsity players (available) due to injuries, sickness and the track meet (at Ames),” said Ankeny coach Simon Brown. “It was a good opportunity to use seven of the JV girls for the majority of the game.”
Ankeny built a 7-0 halftime lead, then added three more goals in the second half to end the game via the mercy rule. In addition to Gott’s three goals, seven other Hawkettes each contributed a goal.
“We need to be a little better in front of the goal, but we are creating a lot of the right ideas,” Brown said. “It’s good to see the moments in practice come through, even with girls missing.”
Ankeny raised its record to 4-0 and has now outscored its opponents by a 17-0 margin this season. Ottumwa dropped to 0-6.
The Hawkettes will travel to Fort Dodge on Thursday for their CIML Iowa Conference opener against the Dodgers (0-0), who have yet to play this season.
