Ankeny boys’ swimming standout Owen Schwebach has verbally committed to Xavier University in Cincinnati.
Schwebach, a senior-to-be, picked the Musketeers over the University of Denver and Lindenwood University.
“After my visit, Xavier was my clear first choice,” said Schwebach. “I loved the size of the campus, the team atmosphere, and the support for athletes. I also liked their Sports Management and Business Analytic major.”
Schwebach is a three-time all-American and an 11-time state placewinner. He placed fourth in the 100 butterfly at last year’s state meet with a time of 49.99 seconds, helping the Hawks to a fourth-place finish overall in coach Justin Crouch’s final season.
Schwebach swam on the runner-up 200 and 400 freestyle relays that earned all-American honors. He also swam on the sixth-place 200 medley relay.
As a freshman in 2021, Schwebach swam on the state champion 200 freestyle relay that earned all-American honors. That was Ankeny’s first state title in a relay event.
Schwebach also swam on the ninth-place medley relay and finished 15th in the 500 freestyle. He helped the Hawks to a runner-up finish overall.
As a sophomore, Schwebach helped Ankeny to a seventh-place finish. He took sixth in the 50 freestyle (21.48), seventh in the butterfly (50.67) and also swam on the sixth-place 200 freestyle and eighth-place 400 freestyle relays.
“I’m not sure what events I’ll swim right now, but I am open to whatever coach Brent (MacDonald) puts me in,” Schwebach said. “My 100 butterfly is competitive in Xavier’s conference–the Big East.”
