Injuries have been a problem all season for the Ankeny volleyball team.
Now, the Hawkettes are dealing with some sickness as well.
Junior outside hitter Kamryn Scheib, who leads the team with 203 kills, was out of the lineup on Saturday as fifth-ranked Ankeny traveled to the Waverly-Shell Rock Invitational.
“It was a rough day,” said Ankeny coach Liz Baethke. “Kam couldn’t make the trip because she still wasn’t feeling well.”
The Hawkettes went 2-3 on the day in the round-robin tournament. They posted wins over Cedar Rapids Jefferson (21-6, 21-5) and Waverly-Shell Rock (21-9, 21-13).
Ankeny’s only three-set match came against Iowa City Liberty, which posted a 21-18, 19-21, 15-13 victory. The Lightning avenged two earlier losses.
The Hawkettes dropped a 21-18, 21-16 decision to Denver, the No. 5 team in Class 2A. The Cyclones are one of only two teams to defeat Ankeny Christian Academy, the No. 1 squad and defending state champion in Class 1A.
Ankeny’s other loss came to Nevada, 21-19, 21-16.
“I had to use Maya Ridgeway and Marlee Ellison on the outsides,” said Baethke, whose team is now 19-11 on the season. “Our middles carried us, and a lot of kids had good opportunities to play.”
The Hawkettes will travel across town to No. 2 Ankeny Centennial (21-5) for a CIML Conference match on Tuesday.
