It’s not very often that the sixth score for a high school golf team makes a difference.
But that was the case for the Ankeny Centennial girls’ squad on Wednesday at Blank Golf Course.
The Jaguars lost to Waukee Northwest, 167-187, and battled Dowling Catholic to a 187-187 tie in a CIML Conference triangular meet. Both Centennial and the Maroons had the same fifth score, which meant that the outcome would be decided by the sixth score.
The Jaguars got a 56 from Sophia Wilson, while Dowling had a 57 from Margaret Lock.
“We won by one stroke,” said Centennial coach John Petersen.
The loss to Northwest was Centennial’s first to a CIML opponent. The Jaguars are now 5-1 in the league with one triangular meet remaining.
Centennial was led by Payton Drefke, who carded a 3-over-par 39 on the back nine to earn runner-up honors. She made a birdie on the par-5, No. 12 hole.
Northwest’s Hannah Pettitt also shot a 39 and earned medalist honors on a cardoff. She made a birdie on the par-4, No. 18 hole while Drefke had a bogey.
Brooke Ridout fired a 48 for the Jaguars. Cate Trewet and Kaylee Sprecher each carded a 50, and Kate Geiselhart had a 54.
The Jaguars will compete in the Southeast Polk Invitational on Thursday at Copper Creek.
