The Ankeny boys’ soccer team ended its losing skid on Monday, but the night still ended with another frustrating result.
The Hawks led for most of the game before visiting Waukee scored an equalizer late in the second half to forge a 1-1 draw.
“We did everything it takes to win the game for 70 minutes,” said Ankeny coach Trevor Fuccio.

Both teams were looking to get a much-needed win. Ankeny had lost five straight games–four of them by shutout–while the Warriors had dropped four in a row.
The Hawks took an early lead when Cal Wahlberg found the net for his fifth goal of the season. Keaton Kobow earned the assist, his fourth of the year.
The goal ended a scoring drought of more than 240 minutes for Ankeny, which was coming off three consecutive shutout losses last week. However, it wasn’t enough.
“We created a lot of high quality opportunities,” Fuccio said. “We had multiple 1-on-1s with their goalkeeper, and we were unable to score the second (half). We ran out of gas in the last 10 minutes, and they created enough in the end to get the equalizer.”

The Hawks are now 0-5-1 in the CIML Conference and 2-8-1 overall. Waukee’s records are 0-4-1 and 3-8-1.
“It was a frustrating one as we defended well and created a bunch of opportunities,” Fuccio said. “But in the end, we came up short and have to settle for the tie.”
Ankeny will play a non-conference game at North Polk (6-2-1) on Thursday.
