Ankeny boys’ soccer coach Trevor Fuccio has decided to focus on his other responsibilities.
Fuccio resigned from his position after guiding the Hawks to a 28-27-3 record over the last three seasons. He led the program to a pair of state tournament berths.
“Stepping away from the program was not an easy decision,” said Fuccio. “I’ve truly enjoyed my time at Ankeny, but balancing my full-time career, my coaching responsibilities at Simpson, and my coaching responsibilities at Ankeny was becoming increasingly challenging. I felt it was important to create more time to focus on my family and faith while also allowing myself the opportunity to expand my role at Simpson.”
Fuccio, who serves as an assistant coach for the men’s soccer team at Simpson, was promoted to Ankeny’s head coach in the fall of 2023. He previously served as an assistant under Marcus Varnum, who also left to take on a larger role with the Simpson program.
Fuccio guided Ankeny to an 11-9 mark in his first season in 2024. The Hawks advanced to the state tournament before dropping a 3-2 decision to Dowling Catholic in the Class 4A quarterfinals.Last year, Ankeny posted a 12-6-2 record. The Hawks again qualified for state and reached the semifinals before falling to eventual champion Valley, 1-0.
“Looking back, I’m extremely proud of what we accomplished during my five years with the program,” Fuccio said. “We reached the state tournament three times—twice as head coach and once as an assistant coach. We also helped many players continue their soccer careers at the collegiate level, and it has been incredibly rewarding to see so many of them achieve success beyond high school.”
Ankeny struggled to a 5-12-1 mark this spring, but Fuccio said he thinks the future of the program is bright. Assistant coach Jake Potratz, who is also on the Simpson staff, could be Fuccio’s successor.
“Beyond the results, I’m proud of the culture we built and sustained, and the values that the program was built on,” Fuccio said. “I have no doubt the program will continue to thrive. The current roster is young, but it is also very talented, hardworking, and fully committed to the program. I’m excited to watch their growth and see what they accomplish in the years ahead.
“I have complete confidence in the current coaching staff and believe that Jake is the right person to lead the program moving forward, and I look forward to seeing their continued success,” he added.
