The Ankeny Centennial Duals was reduced to a quadrangular wrestling tournament on Saturday due to the absence of a couple of teams.
The host Jaguars still won the event for the fifth straight year.
Centennial easily defeated all three of its opponents to raise its overall record to 5-0. The Jaguars rolled to a 65-9 victory over Oskaloosa, followed with a 60-24 triumph over ADM, and then posted a 45-19 decision over Carlisle in the de facto championship match.
“Overall, we wrestled well–better than we did on Thursday (against Ottumwa),” said Centennial coach Jay Groth. “We did a little better job of getting off our backs if we get on it or staying off our back in the first place. I wish that we would have had every team there, but Clear Lake couldn’t come down because of the weather and Newton cancelled on us (Friday) because of skin disease and illness.”
Eight Centennial wrestlers went a perfect 3-0 on the day, including Cael Hron at 126 and 132 pounds and fourth-ranked Carter Cahill at 160. They both recorded three falls.
Carter Bennett had two pins and a technical fall at 138. Payton Bright had two falls while wrestling at 113 and 120, and so did Ari Ehlts at 152, Logan Song at 170, Zach English at 182 and Kaden Kaiser at 220.

“I thought Song did a better job of being offensive and attacking,” Groth said. “Ehlts showed a lot of improvement and a lot of grit, so that was nice to see. And Carter Bennett did a good job of staying in position and wrestling through some adversity.”
The Jaguars looked like a different team than the one that edged Ottumwa, 39-36, two days earlier.
“I thought our boys went out and fought a little harder,” Groth said. “I think they took Ottumwa for granted, and they found out that nobody is going to roll over for them. Hopefully, they learned from that.”
Centennial again competed without No. 7 Cael Wiener at 132 and No. 9 Jackson Helmkamp at 152. That duo has combined for five state tournament appearances.
“We’re hoping to get Cael back in the lineup next week. He’s still battling some stomach issues and trying to get healthy,” Groth said. “And we’re hoping Helmkamp gets cleared to wrestle in the beginning of January.”
The Jaguars will travel to Mason City on Thursday for their CIML Iowa Conference opener against the Mohawks.
