Any fans of the Ankeny Centennial wrestling team who showed up late for Tuesday’s dual meet against visiting Ames may have missed it.
The Jaguars remained unbeaten with a 72-9 victory, getting most of their points via forfeits. Only four of the 14 scheduled matches were actually contested.
“The Ames coach messaged me on Sunday and said they were going to have three open weights,” said Centennial coach Jay Groth. “By Monday it was four, then (Tuesday) afternoon it was up to seven open weights and by the time they showed up they had 10. The varsity dual lasted about 20 minutes.
“I’ve never had a meet like this one,” he added.
The Jaguars improved their records to 2-0 in the CIML Iowa Conference and 7-0 overall. Due to the forfeits, a victory was assured before anyone even stepped on the mat.
“They’re just injured and sick–it’s not COVID,” Groth said of the Little Cyclones. “It was a little frustrating. Obviously, we want to compete, but we decided to have practice after school. You’ve just got to make the best of a bad situation.”
It was Senior Night for the Jaguars, who got a pair of falls from seniors Carter Bennett at 138 pounds and Carter Cahill at 152. Bennett, who is ranked 11th, is now 11-3 on the season.
Cahill, who is ranked fifth at 160, needed just 36 seconds to pin Jason Roberts. He raised his record to 14-0.
Groth said it wasn’t a bad night overall.
“It gave us the ability to focus on the seniors since we didn’t have to worry about the meet,” he said.
Centennial will now be off until Jan. 6, when it hosts 10th-ranked Ankeny in the annual crosstown showdown. The Jaguars will then compete in The Clash on Jan. 7-8 at Rochester, Minn.
“It’ll be a big weekend for us,” Groth said.
