The rainy weather put a damper on Wednesday’s CIML Conference triangular meet at Blank Golf Course.
When play finally began, the Ankeny Centennial girls’ golf team struggled in the wet conditions and ended up shooting a 200 in the nine-hole meet. The Jaguars lost to both Johnston and Dowling Catholic, who posted scores of 192 and 197, respectively.
“After 10 to 15 minutes of a warmup the storms rolled into Blank, leading to about a 45-minute delay,” said Centennial coach Marty Kiepe. “I felt like the weather threw off the timing just a bit this morning. The girls were excited to get back on the course, and the weather popped up quickly out of nowhere. Props to coach (Ron) Gray and the staff at Blank for getting the event in because it’s hard to reschedule this time of year.
“It’s easy to blame results on the weather and how wet it got out there, but the thing I had to remind the girls is that they are all playing the same course in the same conditions,” Kiepe added.
Centennial’s Cate Trewet carded a 46 to earn runner-up honors. She finished five strokes behind the medalist, Lily Bowersox of Johnston.
“I’m really proud of how Cate fought today in a day where she didn’t have her best stuff,” Kiepe said. “There were a lot of times where she could’ve thrown in the towel, but she managed to grind out a few saves to keep some big numbers off the card.”
Gretta Borich shot a 47 for the Jaguars. She placed fourth overall.
“A great week for Gretta continued,” Kiepe said. “She shot a personal best 18-hole score on Monday and followed it up with a personal best nine-hole round. Gretta continues to work hard and keep a positive attitude. She doesn’t allow one bad hole to slow her down and always keeps her head up. Her highlights of the day were back-to-back pars on 17 and 18 to end the day–holes that caused many others trouble today.”
Teagan Skinner fired a 53 for Centennial, which had finished 16 strokes ahead of Dowling in the Jaguar Invitational on Monday at Briarwood Golf Club. Kyler Jones had a 54, Madi Trosper shot a 59, and Emma Bisgard added a 66.
Maddy Gochoel and Isla Corron each carded a 54 for Centennial’s junior varsity squad. They placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the JV meet.
“That was a decent showing for our JV squad,” Kiepe said of the Jaguars’ 226 total. “I’m very optimistic that Maddy and Isla will continue to get better as the season goes on. You can expect to see Isla in her varsity debut on Thursday (in the Toni Dickey Invitational at Otter Creek).”
