After shooting a 400 on the same course two days earlier in the Lamson Invitational, the Ankeny girls’ golf team returned to Willow Creek on Wednesday for a CIML Conference triangular meet and posted a 186 total for a nine-hole round, allowing the Hawkettes to defeat their crosstown rival for the second time in three meetings this season.
Valley won the meet by shooting a 178 on its home course. Ankeny Centennial finished with a 191 total.
“It was a great showing of our potential!” said Ankeny coach Kelley Emke. “Having our nine-hole season-low made for a great 1-1 night. We were really hoping for the (overall) win, but Valley had some great scores!”
Valley’s Divya Bhargava carded a 5-over-par 41 to earn medalist honors. Centennial’s Cate Trewet was the runner-up with a 42.
“It was a perfect night for golf,” said Centennial coach Marty Kiepe. “The highlights of Cate’s round were back-to-back birdies on Nos. 7 and 8.”
Madalyn Ross fired a 44 to lead Ankeny. She had missed the previous two meets due to a choir trip.
Catherine Nelson carded a 46 for the Hawkettes. Aubree Moeller shot a 47, Gabby Haga had a 49, and Tenley Beelner added a 58.
“It was nice to have four scores in the 40s,” Emke said.
Teagan Skinner shot a 47 for the Jaguars.
“Teagan got off to a little bit of a slow start this year, so it was really nice to see her bounce back and perform like we know she can,” Kiepe said.

Centennial’s Madi Trosper and Isla Corron each fired a 51. Gretta Borich had a 53, and Kyler Jones finished with a 54.
“It’s been great watching Corrin and Madi pick up the game as they came into this year with no varsity experience,” Kiepe said.
This was the first conference triangular for Valley (2-0). Ankeny is now 2-2 in the league, while Centennial’s record dropped to 0-4.
Both Emke and Kiepe were pleased with the play of their junior varsity squads.
“Our JV also continues to improve!” Emke said.
Centennial’s Maddy Gochoel was the JV medalist with a 48.
“Maddy gets better and better every day,” Kiepe said. “Out of the girls that came off the course, Maddy was probably the most upset with how she finished. I love to see that competitive side of her and can’t wait to see where this game takes her.”
The Hawkettes will compete in the Turk Bowman Invitational on Monday at Veenker Golf Course in Ames.
“I’m excited for Monday when we will have all six varsity girls competing,” Emke said.
The Jaguars will travel to eastern Iowa on Tuesday for the Linn-Mar Invitational at Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Marion.
