Sophomore Madalyn Ross and junior Aubree Moeller both earned top-12 finishes to lead the Ankeny girls’ golf team to a sixth-place finish among nine squads in the Turk Bowman Invitational on Monday at Veenker Golf Course in Ames.
The Hawkettes posted a 425 total, their worst 18-hole round of the season, on one of the state’s most difficult courses.
“Veenker is just one of those courses that has good holes and bad holes,” said Ankeny coach Kelley Emke. “Unfortunately, some of the girls had more bad than good, but it’s always a good learning experience in making decisions outside of what our normal course requires.”
Still, there were some bright spots. Ross placed 11th as an individual with a 97, while Moeller finished 12th with a 98.
“I’m super proud of Madalyn and Aubree for getting flags today!” Emke said.
Ankeny’s Catherine Nelson shot a 114. Gabby Haga fired a 116, Lydia Gerety had a 129, and Tenley Beelner added a 131.
Gilbert shot a 339 to easily win the team title. Dallas Center-Grimes was a distant second with a 388, followed by Marshalltown with a 404.
Gilbert’s Ava Lohrbach carded an even-par 73 to earn medalist honors. Her twin sister, Ella, was the runner-up with an 81.
The Hawkettes will face Dowling Catholic and Waukee on Wednesday at Sugar Creek. It will be the final CIML Conference triangular meet for all three teams.
