Even without their best player, Hawk golfers top ‘distracted’ Centennial

September 17, 2019 by Dan Holm

The Ankeny boys' golf team was missing its top player on Monday. Crosstown rival Ankeny Centennial was missing its head coach, and perhaps its focus as well. The Hawks overcame the absence of Hunter Johnson to post a 167-173 victory over Centennial at Briarwood Golf Club. It was Ankeny's second dual-meet win ever against the Jaguars. "It definitely … [Read more...] about Even without their best player, Hawk golfers top ‘distracted’ Centennial

The second-ranked Hawkettes played without all-state setter Phyona Schrader, who missed the tournament in order to take the ACT test. They also lost two other key players, outside hitter Isabelle Vacek and libero Kaci Behrens, to … [Read more...] about Hawkettes place 2nd at tournament as Whims closes in on milestone

‘We’re our own worst enemy’: Little things prove costly in Hawks’ 28-27 loss

September 14, 2019 by Dan Holm

Rick Nelson knows his way around the UNI-Dome about as well as anyone. The Ankeny football coach returned to his old stomping grounds on Friday, but it was a bittersweet homecoming. Nelson's Hawks came up short in their bid to knock off defending Class 4A state runner-up Cedar Falls, dropping a 28-27 decision to the Tigers in a battle of top-10 … [Read more...] about ‘We’re our own worst enemy’: Little things prove costly in Hawks’ 28-27 loss

Ankeny swimmers roll to victory at Newton, improve to 3-0 on season

September 13, 2019 by Dan Holm

Even in a different sized pool, the Ankeny girls' swimming team still knows how to swim fast. The third-ranked Hawkettes traveled to Newton on Thursday and came away with a 120-50 victory over the Cardinals. They improved to 3-0 on the season. "Newton's pool is 25 meters instead of the usual 25 yard pools we compete in," said Ankeny coach Michelle … [Read more...] about Ankeny swimmers roll to victory at Newton, improve to 3-0 on season

Ankeny plays lights out in Week 2, stifles No. 9 Dragons for 20-7 win

September 7, 2019 by connorferguson

By all means, Friday night’s Ankeny-Johnston matchup at Ankeny Stadium was a measuring stick game for both teams. The Hawks didn’t know if Week 1 opponent Ankeny Centennial was as good as they were last season. Ninth-ranked Johnston didn’t know if they pummeled a good Urbandale team or if the J-Hawks were just average. On Friday night, however, Ankeny … [Read more...] about Ankeny plays lights out in Week 2, stifles No. 9 Dragons for 20-7 win

Ankeny’s best effort not enough to get past rival Centennial

August 31, 2019 by connorferguson

The ball was snapped back to the holder. Ankeny kicker Max Pelham was ready to put his team up by three points on the opening possession in overtime. But the snap was muffed, and the holder was forced out of bounds 10 yards away from the end zone. All Ankeny Centennial needed to do was protect the ball and kick a field goal, and the Jaguars would take … [Read more...] about Ankeny’s best effort not enough to get past rival Centennial

Taylor shoots 35, leads Hawk golfers to victory over Dowling Catholic

August 30, 2019 by Dan Holm

Ankeny golfer Dylan Taylor badly missed a short putt for par on the No. 9 hole during Thursday's dual meet against Dowling Catholic at Otter Creek. It might have been his only bad shot of the day. Taylor made a pair of birdies and carded a 1-under-par 35 to earn medalist honors while leading the Hawks to a 148-155 victory on their home course. They … [Read more...] about Taylor shoots 35, leads Hawk golfers to victory over Dowling Catholic

‘We feel so much more confident’: Hawks enter season with big goals

August 29, 2019 by connorferguson

The mid-August temperature is getting a little warmer. Team practices are ramping up. And, mainly, a young team is getting older. This football season has the potential to be one of historic proportions for the Ankeny Hawks, because of what kind of a roster they are putting on the field. Last season, the team started eight sophomores--all of … [Read more...] about ‘We feel so much more confident’: Hawks enter season with big goals
